How to edit a GPX file online

A GPX isn't set in stone. Rough track, wrong sport type, generic name, incorrect date: all of it can be fixed without software, right in your browser. Here's what you can change and which tool to use.

What can you edit in a GPX?

Two families of edits, two different tools: the geometry (the track itself, its points) on one side, the metadata (name, sport, date) on the other.

Fixing the track

To reroute a section, extend a course or delete misplaced points, the route editor lets you manipulate the track point by point on the map, then re-export the GPX.

Changing the name, sport or date

An activity imported under the wrong sport, or with a shifted timestamp, is fixed in the metadata editor: rename the activity, pick the right sport type and, if needed, shift the date and time uniformly.

Edit the metadata

Worth knowing: the activity name is only kept in GPX โ€” FIT and TCX have no standard field for it. Sport and date, however, are stored in all three formats.

Other common fixes

  • Remove a stray start or end โ†’ the trim tool.
  • Rejoin an outing recorded as two files โ†’ the merge tool.
  • Adjust per-kilometre split times โ†’ the splits tool.
  • Repair an unreadable or corrupted file โ†’ the repair tool.

Check the edited file

After any edit, reopen the exported file in the viewer: one glance confirms the track, stats and data are as expected before importing it elsewhere.

FAQ

Can I edit a GPX without software?
Yes. An online editor lets you change the track and metadata directly in the browser, with nothing to install and no account to create.
Can I change an activity's date?
Yes. The metadata editor applies a uniform shift to all timestamps, which preserves the duration and chronology of the outing.
Is the name I set kept after conversion?
In GPX yes. In FIT and TCX, the activity name has no standard field, so it isn't kept โ€” unlike the sport and date.
Is my original file overwritten?
No. You download a new edited file; the original stays intact, and nothing is sent to a server.
