How to create a GPX route from scratch

Before a ride or a hike, plotting your own route and sending it to your watch saves a lot of wrong turns. You don't need heavy software: you can draw a route point by point in your browser, export it as GPX and load it onto your device. Here's how.

What is a GPX route?

It's a series of connected GPS points describing a path to follow. Unlike recording an activity (which captures what you did), a route is created in advance: your watch or GPS then guides you along the track with turn prompts.

Draw your route

Open the route editor and build your path right on the map:

  1. 1

    Place your start point

Click the map where your outing begins.

  2. 2

    Add points along the road

Each click extends the track. Follow the roads or trails you want to take.

  3. 3

    Adjust as needed

Move or delete a point to fix the track, without starting over.

  4. 4

    Export as GPX

Download the .gpx file, ready to import onto your watch, GPS or app.

Create my GPX route

Everything happens in your browser: the track is never sent to a server. No account, no limit.

Send the route to your device

Once the GPX is exported, import it into Garmin Connect, Komoot or straight onto your watch/GPS. If your device wants another format, you can convert the GPX (for example to FIT for some Garmin watches).

Edit an existing route

Already have a GPX to tweak (shorten, reroute, fix a point)? Open it in the editor to adjust it instead of redrawing it.

FAQ

Is creating a GPX route free?
Yes, completely free and with no sign-up. Drawing happens in your browser, with no limit.
Can I follow my GPX route on a Garmin watch?
Yes. Import the GPX into Garmin Connect or onto the watch. If the device prefers FIT, convert the file first.
Is my track saved online?
No. The route stays in your browser and is never sent to a server, which keeps it private.
